Installing socketed tennis court lines
Using socketed lines on a clay tennis court offers several advantages, but proper installation is essential to achieve a professional and long-lasting result.
Whether you’re a court technician, a club manager, or an enthusiast maintaining your own court, this guide will help you carry out an high-quality and durable installation.
🔧 What You’ll Need
- 2 people (approx. 3 hours of work)
- Line tensioner
- Drill
- 4 long nails or 4 Phillips screwdrivers (to fix the line tensioner to the ground)
- 2 hammers
- Angle grinder
- Measuring tape (or string line)
- Countersink (if using butterfly clips)
- Nails (we recommend 10 cm galvanized nails)
- Roller, preferably motorized and electric
- Short straightedge (about 50 cm)
- Line hammer (or a standard hammer + wooden board)
🛠️ Installation Steps
1. Fixing the First Line
- Start with a baseline.
- Fix one end of the line into the ground using a nail + clip or bracket.
- Leave a few extra centimeters to avoid ending up with a line that’s too short.
2. Tensioning and Securing
- One person holds the bracket in place with him/her foot.
- The other uses the line tensioner to stretch the line.
- To check proper tension: lift the line at the center – it shouldn’t rise more than 10–15 cm.
- Secure the other end and remove the tensioner.
- Check both ends are straight; if not, adjust with a hammer.
3. Installing the Remaining Lines
- Continue with the second baseline.
- Then proceed in order with the sidelines, service lines, and finally the center service line.
4. Finishing Touches
- Cut any excess line with the angle grinder.
- Create the hole for the net center strap hook.
- Position the service line markers using a tape measure or string. Fix them using the line hammer or hammer + wooden board.
5. Pressing Down the Lines
- Walk along the lines to press them into the surface (be sure to walk in a straight line).
- Then pass the roller:
- Make sure the court is wet (water it if necessary).
- Move slowly.
- Go back and forth every 2–3 meters.
- Never turn the roller while on the lines.
- Accelerate and brake gently (our Dart2.0 roller handles this automatically).
6. Final Steps
- Spread a thin layer of clay over the lines using the straightedge.
- Check that the line ends aren’t lifting — if they are, fix them in place with nails using the line slot.
